(Farm)Share the Love — How Carnes Crossroads Brings the Harvest Home

August 28th, 2025

Living in an Agrihood means waking up to possibilities that extend far beyond your front door. At Carnes Crossroads, those possibilities grow right in your backyard through our thriving Farm Share program, where residents enjoy the freshest seasonal produce year-round. No planting or watering required.

From Soil to Supper Table

Instead of wandering grocery store aisles wondering where your vegetables traveled from and how long they sat in a truck, you can stroll through your neighborhood to collect the freshest tomatoes, radishes and onions you’ll ever taste.

Farm Director Christopher Burtt and his expert team have been hard at work cultivating an impressive array of seasonal favorites perfectly suited to South Carolina’s climate. “I think having that direct connection to what you’re consuming is incredibly attractive,” Burtt explains.

Spring Into Fresh Beginnings

As spring bloomed into early summer, residents enjoyed an abundant harvest of root vegetables including turnips, radishes, beets, carrots, and the ever-popular watermelon radishes. Fresh onions and potatoes sprouted from the soil alongside leafy greens like kale, collards, and chard. A special greens mix featuring arugula, mustard, and tatsoi added variety to salad bowls throughout the community.

By late spring, the real stars of summer emerged. Tomatoes and eggplant started producing prolifically, joined by summer squash that continues providing fresh harvests through the warm months.

Eggplant and Peppers and Beets, Oh My!

Summer’s peak brings the full glory of the Farm Share program. Tomatoes and eggplant produce abundantly through July, while fresh green beans add crunch to dinner plates. Though some crops slow down with the intense heat, residents continue enjoying beets, turnips, and onions from earlier plantings. Peppers and okra thrive in the summer warmth, with sweet potatoes growing strong for fall harvest.

The Farm Share program operates through “Farm Bucks,” a convenient digital currency automatically loaded to residents’ Carnes Crossroads app. This flexible system lets families choose exactly what they want from the season’s bounty. Our seasonal bounties are always available to purchase at our Farm Store, open to all Wednesdays through Sundays. Check out our hours of operation on our website.

Autumn Abundance Ahead

As seasons change, so does the farm’s focus. Farm Director, Christopher Burtt, plans seasonal crop rotations to ensure residents always have access to peak-fresh produce. Fall will bring back beloved favorites like broccoli, cabbage, kale, and collards, plus head lettuce and the same diverse greens mix that proved so popular earlier in the year.

“We want residents to get to know us, and we want to get to know them, so we can both learn from each other and grow together,” says Burtt, whose decade of horticultural experience includes specializing in vegetable production along South Carolina’s coast.

Pick Your Own Adventure

Beyond the Farm Share program, residents can explore the You-Pick Garden for seasonal herbs and fresh fruit (coming soon!). “We have gardens dedicated to you picking it yourself,” Burtt notes. “The whole idea is not only to provide fresh produce, but to provide an experiential opportunity where people can connect to the land themselves.”
