Celebrating Earth Day at Carnes Crossroads Agrihood

April 17th, 2025

At Carnes Crossroads, Earth Day is more than a single date on the April calendar. The spirit of the holiday is a reflection of how our residents strive to live year-round. Now, as our Agrihood takes shape with The Farm preparing to open this spring, our community is set to fully embrace a way of life that prioritizes sustainability, conservation, and healthy living above all.

The Conservation Benefits of Eating Local

One of the greatest gifts of living in an Agrihood like Carnes Crossroads is the ability to enjoy farm-fresh food grown just steps from your front door — juicy heirloom tomatoes, delicious sweet potatoes, and onions that taste unlike anything at the supermarket. Everything is right here.

The benefits of eating locally grown produce go beyond reducing food miles. The fruits and veggies here at Carnes Crossroads will be richer in nutrients, harvested at peak ripeness, and free from the preservatives needed for long-haul shipping. By fostering a deeper connection to what we eat, we’re cultivating a healthier, more sustainable lifestyle.

Agrihood Farm Director Christopher Burtt plays a vital role in shaping the farm-forward lifestyle that defines our community. As he puts it:

“We’re going to have an 11-acre farm where residents can have fresh and delicious organically grown produce within walking distance. The community gets to know not only who is growing their food but also how it’s grown — seeing the challenges and the joys of the process firsthand.”

A Soil-First Approach — Growing with the Land

The farm at Carnes Crossroads follows a whole-system approach to sustainability, recognizing that every action taken in the field can have far-reaching effects. This means focusing on thoughtful, low-impact pest and weed management that benefits the entire ecosystem. At the core of these efforts is healthy soil, treated as a living system and carefully cultivated. Organic matter, like compost and cover crops, feeds beneficial microbes, while proper fertility practices, including soil testing and organic fertilizers, prevent overuse and buildup. Maintaining strong soil structure through reduced disturbance and minimal compaction ensures the foundation of the farm remains resilient.

Christopher Burtt envisions the Farm as a living classroom, where residents can learn hands-on. He says:

“We’re converting an acre into a perennial orchard with blueberries, muscadines, figs, and citrus. We’ll host workshops on harvesting, growing, and even propagating plants.”

Water Conservation — Protecting a Precious Resource

In a community surrounded by gorgeous lakes, nine miles of winding trails, and Lowcountry charm, water stewardship is a priority. The Farm leads by example, using smart irrigation systems to optimize water usage and reduce waste. Additionally, the landscaping you see throughout the community was carefully selected to be compatible with the natural environment, requiring little watering and maintenance.
