Charleston One of the Best U.S. Cities for Total Eclipse Viewing

Charleston is one of the top cities in the U.S. to view August’s total solar eclipse, and more than a million people are scheduled to visit the area to experience the event. On the afternoon of August 21st for roughly three minutes (depending on where you are in Charleston) there will be complete darkness. Total solar eclipses are few and far between, so you don’t want to miss this natural phenomenon. There are a slew of public events planned around the region to mark the eclipse. Below is a list of just a few:

Downtown Charleston 

The Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry is hosting an event from 9 am-5 pm that will focus on educational programming for families.This program is free with CML membership or admission. Pre-registration for this event is not required. Fore more information visit www.explorecml.org

Charleston Astronomy Meetup invites you to join them from 1 pm-4 pm for a total solar eclipse viewing at the Charlotte Street Park Irish Memorial. Projections and solar filtered telescopes will be available during this event. You can sign up here.

The Riverdogs are hosting an eclipse baseball game on the 21st. Gates will open at 1pm and eclipse related activities will continue until the start of the game at 4:05 pm. Click here for more information.

Daniel Island 

Come watch this historic event at the Daniel Island Library from 2 pm-3 pm. Eclipse viewing glasses will be provided on a first come, first serve basis. For more information click here.

MUSC Health Stadium is hosting an eclipse viewing party. Gates will open at 11 am and the event will feature astronomy activities, a science-based kid zone, local food, drinks and entertainment. Tickets can be purchased in advance for $8; admission for children twelve and under and military personnel is free. Visit www.bsportsent.com for more information.

West Ashley 

Citadel Mall is a free “Offical NASA Viewing Location” and will be hosting an Eclipse Extravaganza from 1 pm-3 pm. The event will include activities for all ages, food trucks, NASA educational materials and more. Fore more information see www.citadelmall.net.

Mt. Pleasant 

Patriots Point Naval Maritime Museum and ABC News 4 have joined forces to host “Eclipse on a Warship.” The museum will offer an array of events for all ages throughout the day. Tickets may only be purchased the day of the event starting at 9 am. For more information see www.patriotspoint.org.

The Beaches 

Pier 101 on Folly Beach will host “Eclipse on the Atlantic” from 1 pm-4 pm. There will be live music throughout the event by Band of Brothers. Eclipse viewing glasses will be provided to those in attendance. Click here for more information.

From 11:30 am-4:30 pm the City of Isle of Palms will host “Get Eclipsed on IOP,” featuring musical guests, children’s entertainment and eclipse information. A limited supply of eclipse glasses will be available. Fore more information see www.iop.net.
