Charleston’s Top Employers Bringing Buyers to Carnes Crossroads

October 22nd, 2013

Charleston is attracting more than just tourists these days. A growing number of employers in the aerospace, technology and defense sectors are in growth mode, bringing jobs and new employees looking to make their home in the Lowcountry. We’re seeing the impact here at Carnes Crossroads Real Estate, where we’ve been working with potential residents who are drawn to the small town community developing here within close proximity to so many of the area’s biggest employers.

By far the most prominent of the new companies establishing themselves in the area is Boeing. When news broke in 2009 that the aerospace giant would be investing $750 million to open a 787 assembly plant near the airport in North Charleston, creating 3,800 new jobs, it was hailed as the biggest economic development news in South Carolina’s history. As it turns out, that first announcement was only the tip of the iceberg. The scope of Boeing’s presence in Charleston has grown quickly, and since 2009 the company has invested more than $1 billion and employed more than 6,000 people at its campus in North Charleston. All-in-all, Boeing appears to have far-reaching, long-term plans for Charleston and South Carolina. In total, the company has committed to creating 2,000 additional jobs and investing another $1 billion in South Carolina over the next eight years.

Another big Charleston area employer, located right here in Goose Creek, is SPAWAR. Also known as the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center, SPAWAR employs approximately 10,000 people (civilians, military personnel and contractors) who help support our armed forces all over the world by defining and developing information systems and solutions. It’s highly technical – and mostly classified – work, and although SPAWAR has been operating here for some time, many people don’t know about it. But the industry is growing, and SPAWAR continues to bring jobs and people to our area of the Lowcountry.

Located in North Charleston, Joint Base Charleston is home to the Charleston U.S. Air Force Base and the U.S. Navy Naval Support center, which were merged in 2010. The facility employs more than 20,000 active-duty, Reserve and civilian personnel, making it the largest employer in the greater Charleston area.

We look forward to continuing to work with employees at these and other growing organizations in Charleston who are looking for a conveniently located, small-town community to call home!
