Community Comes Together at Carnes Crossroads to Fight Childhood Cancer.

September 27th, 2016

Saturday, September 24 dawned bright and warm at Carnes Crossroads as over a thousand people, of all ages and walks of life, gathered for the Charleston St. Jude Walk/Run to End Childhood Cancer. Throughout the day, similar scenes played out across the country as 61 cities hosted their own St. Jude Walk/Run events.

September is National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and the Lowcountry community rallied big in support of the mission of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. 79 teams participated in the Carnes Crossroads event and over $82,000 in donations was raised, well exceeding the $70,000 goal.

The run portion of the 5K event kicked off at 8:30 with the walkers following a few minutes later. Waves of colorfully attired teams streamed out along the roads and scenic walking trails of the Carnes Crossroads community. Many wore t-shirts adorned with the names of loved ones they were participating in honor of.

A short time later, smiles, hugs and even a few tears of joy were the order of the day as the runners and walkers began crossing the finish line to the cheers of spectators and race volunteers.

Since opening its doors in 1962, treatments invented at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital have helped push the overall childhood cancer survival rate from 20 percent to more than 80 percent. The non-profit hospital and research facility freely shares the breakthroughs it makes, and every child saved at St. Jude means doctors and scientists worldwide can use that knowledge to save thousands more children.

In part because of events like the Charleston Walk/Run at Carnes Crossroads, families receiving care at St. Jude never receive a bill for treatment, travel, housing or food.

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is making a real difference in the fight against childhood cancer and Carnes Crossroads is proud to partner with them on this lifesaving event. Here are some photos from the day:
