Volunteer at The Farm and Dig Into Agrihood Joys

November 21st, 2025

At Carnes Crossroads, volunteer opportunities at the Farm are all about planting, picking, teaching, learning, and harvesting. They’re also cultivating community and experiencing firsthand what makes life in this Agrihood so unique and special.

Here, resident volunteers have the chance to roll up their sleeves and become active participants in one of the most engaged and bountiful Agrihood communities in the US.

Getting Hands-On, In The Soil

Resident volunteers gather at the Farm to help with essential tasks that keep this Agrihood thriving, from planting seasonal crops to harvesting fresh produce. But that’s just the beginning.

“Farming is one of those concepts that I think is very foreign to a lot of people,” explains Farm Director Christopher Burtt. “We do volunteer days. We have farm tours. We have all these different activities to get people out here. And it’s an excellent opportunity to really showcase not only what farming is, but also what specifically we do for the community.”

Planting Days That Bring People Together

Planting days welcome volunteers of all experience levels. The Farm team guides every step, making these sessions perfect for families or residents eager to deepen their understanding of sustainable agriculture. Recent crops have included carrots, turnips, beets, and an array of herbs that will all find their way into Farm Share baskets and, ultimately, onto residents’ dinner tables.

Harvest Time Calls For Many Hands

When crops reach their peak, volunteers assist with picking, sorting, and preparing fresh produce for the Farm Store and community distribution. There’s genuine satisfaction in harvesting peppers and onions and sweet potatoes you helped nurture, and knowing your neighbors will enjoy the fruits (or vegetables) of your labor. These gatherings often extend beyond the rows, with residents sharing recipes, gardening tips, and building friendships.

Supporting Farm Education And Workshops

Beyond fieldwork, volunteers help facilitate educational programs that teach best farming practices. These workshops attract families who value experiential learning opportunities for their children. The Children’s Learning Garden, which benefits from volunteer support, creates magical moments where little ones get to discover how food grows. It’s incredibly rewarding.
