Volvo To Be A Top Employer in Berkeley County

July 24th, 2017

Volvo is shaping up to be a leading employer in Charleston, and we’re betting that more than a few of the thousands of new employees the company hires will choose to live at Carnes Crossroads. Located off Interstate 26 near Ridgeville, the plant is just ten miles from our community. And just as an increasing number of people working at Boeing’s North Charleston manufacturing plant have discovered, living at Carnes Crossroads combines convenience, a small-town lifestyle and amenities of all kinds, all just a short commute away.

Two years ago, Volvo Cars of North America announced that it had selected Berkeley County as the home of its first North American manufacturing plant, where it plans to produce approximately 100,000 cars each year. Drawn by the “…friendliness, work ethic and passion of the people in the Charleston area,” it joins other major employers in Berkeley County, including Google, Boeing, Blackbaud and Robert Bosch. The factory broke ground in September of 2015, and the first Volvo S60 sedans are expected to roll off the production line starting in 2018.

With development of the site and facility continuing on schedule, Volvo is wasting no time getting integrated into the community. The company is now the title sponsor of one of Charleston’s top annual events, the Volvo Car Open Women’s tennis tournament on Daniel Island. Meanwhile, Volvo is partnering with community leaders in Berkeley, Dorchester and Charleston counties to ensure it develops strong community relations throughout the Lowcountry and to help shape the way it invests in the the communities where its employees live and work. The Coastal Community Foundation has been chosen to administer its charitable giving activities.

We’re excited to welcome Volvo to Charleston – and to offer its employees a convenient and friendly place to call home!
