Fall fun. Lowcountry style.

October 22nd, 2024

Here at Carnes Crossroads, our residents are always excited about the arrival of fall and with it, our calendar of very special annual events. From our gorgeous October scenic strolls and sunsets to our frighteningly-fun costume competitions and spook-tacular witch walks, residents here have it all in the fall!

Beware of wandering witches.

Each year, the Carnes Crossroads coven gathers for its annual Women of Carnes Witch Walk. As is the ancient tradition, host witches look forward to opening their covensteads – those are “homes” to the uninitiated – to fellow bewitched neighbors to share savory snacks, stories and a spooktacular good time. The walk attracts witches from all over the community, and is always a great opportunity to get better acquainted with those neighboring partitioners of the dark arts who, well, are just too busy casting spells to socialize!

Boo at the Barn. A traditional Halloween treat.

Boo at the Barn is traditional family fun at its finest. This day-long event is chock full of activities for Carnes kids of all ages, from toddlers to grandparents. There’s music, food, dancing, games, and of course, a costume contest. After all, what would a Halloween celebration be without one? Aspiring ghouls, goblins and witches are therefore encouraged to come to the party ready to show off their creative costume-making skills and take part in a “spirited” competition! This resident event is a great opportunity to spend time with neighbors and friends.

Trick out that cart for the annual Halloween Golf Cart Parade.

Polish up those fenders and windscreen. Shine those 8” tires and break out your most festive Halloween decorations. It’s time to get to work and transform that golf cart into… what? A “ghoul cart”? A “Vampire Batmobile”? That’s right. Everyone loves a golf cart parade, especially when it’s a parade of tricked-out Halloween themed carts. Just like the game of golf, there are no gimmies here, so give that decorating job your best shot!

October in Charleston. From frightful to family friendly.

The afternoon air is cool and crisp. The leaves are turning gorgeous hues of crimson and gold. But as the sun begins to set, an unmistakable chill descends. Everyone knows why Charleston is America’s “Ghost City.” Oh, you didn’t know? This is a city with a truly dark and disturbing history.

Every October, residents take to the streets (and witches ride their brooms, of course) of Charleston for its extraordinary menu (there’s great food here, too!) of fall fun. When the spirit moves them, those who are brave enough take one of the city’s many ghost tours and explore infamous haunts, such as the Old Exchange Building & Provost Dungeon. There, it is said, guests often encounter the ghosts of the former prisoners, war criminals, and pirates who resided there.

For those less stout of heart, there’s a host of family-friendly activities. The Boone Hall Pumpkin Patch & Corn Maze, for instance, treats young and old alike to traditional fall festival fun with its corn maze, pumpkin patch, hay mountain, play areas, rock climbing wall, goat walk and more.
