Healthy Living On Display at Carnes Crossroads

October 5th, 2018

Fitness and wellness are daily pursuits for many residents at Carnes, with easy access to trails and parks, convenient medical services nearby and a variety of fitness classes to choose from right in the community. This fall, several health-oriented special events on the calendar are giving residents and visitors opportunities to learn about taking their healthy living goals even further.

Inaugural Carnes Crossroads Wellness Fair

Several hundred residents and visitors came to Carnes Crossroads on Sept. 8 for an inaugural event that highlighted our community’s opportunities and resources for healthy living. Over 15 exhibitors showcased their services, which ranged from fitness instruction to medical specialties, massage therapy, nutritional advice, chiropractic services and more. There were lectures and demonstrations, sample classes and healthy snack samples, plus several give-aways. It was a great opportunity for people to explore the many diverse ways to engage in healthy lifestyles at Carnes Crossroads and in Summerville and Goose Creek.

St. Jude Walk/Run to End Childhood Cancer

The Charleston installment of this national event returned to Carnes Crossroads for the third consecutive year on September 22, attracting more than 800 participants and raising more than $60,000 to support the children of St. Jude. Once again, more than a dozen residents participated as part of the “Carnes Crossroads Cruisers: Heart and Sole” team, led by resident and Zumba instructor Ryoko Abbott. It was a beautiful morning, and a great celebration of everything the folks at St. Jude do to make sure children with cancer can get quality care at no cost.

She-Tri Aqua Girl and Aquathon

She-Tri returned to Carnes for the second year with two unique girl- and women-only swim and run events in October. Designed for all skill levels, the swim + run format is perfect for those who find the bike leg to be a limiting factor in a triathlon. The friendly and supportive format is perfect for all levels of skill and experience. Depending on their age, girls age 4-14 competed in a 25 – 200 yard swim and a half- or one-mile run on Friday, October 12 at the AquaGirl event. Women competed in a 250 yard swim and a 5K run on Saturday, October 13 at the Aquathon event. A run-only event for women was also offered this year, and the entire program was so successful that organizers have already started making plans for next year’s event!

Later this fall, Roper St. Francis will officially join the community when its medical office building opens on its 90-acre Carnes Crossroads medical campus. And next year, Roper St. Francis Berkeley Hospital will open on the same campus, becoming the first full-service hospital in Berkeley County. With these and other health-oriented additions to the community on the horizon, we’re sure to see even more health and wellness classes, events and opportunities at Carnes Crossroads in the months ahead!
