The Power of Community Draws Family to Carnes Crossroads

May 12th, 2017

You can settle into a good home and be perfectly comfortable. But when you nestle into a good community, something else happens entirely. Cory and Allison Singleton were no strangers to this notion. As a church pastor and pastor’s wife, they know a thing or two about the power of community.

A job change prompted the Singleton’s move from Columbia, S.C. last fall. But where they landed in the Lowcountry was based on much more than proximity to Cory’s new call, Journey Church. They saw in Carnes Crossroads the invitation to nestle.

Sure, Allison enjoys the convenient access to the entire Charleston region via I-26, just a short, straight shot from their house on Ashby Street. But as the lead teacher, head administrator and director of extra-curriculars for the couple’s three homeschooled children (13 year-old Ava, 10 year-old Tate, and 6 year-old Zoe), her top priority was to settle in a robust, inclusive and intentional “village.”

To say that Carnes has provided the perfect blend of privacy and playfulness is not overstating with this family. “I love the walking trail through the woods because it provides a quiet sanctuary from the busyness of life,” shares Cory. “I also love the barn. I think it’s truly one of the most unique concepts I’ve ever seen in any neighborhood in the way it gathers our sweet community together.”

The Singletons speak of their adopted hometown with the fresh affection of newbies, but also the reasoned loyalty of lifers. “Summerville is such a quaint city,” Cory observes. “I love taking guests visiting into downtown Summerville to experience some of its charm.” They are also fond of Summerville’s nearness to its internationally-praised metro neighbor. “On a map of the world, it’s pretty special to live in any city voted #1 in the world,” notes Cory, adding, “I’ve traveled a lot, and the quantity and quality of restaurants in Charleston truly are unparalleled.”

Being able to select a builder from a thoughtfully curated portfolio appealed to the Singletons, and ultimately they chose Sabal Homes. They were particularly drawn to their home plan’s detached garage and they have plans to extend their social living area to under the carport area in the future. Tate asserts his favorite space in the house is his bedroom – a fact that may have to do with cohabiting the rest of the house with two sisters. Ava and Zoe are quick to agree with their mom that the treasured family gathering spaces are the eat-in kitchen and spacious backyard.

The location, floor plans, and amenities may have brought them here, but the Singletons maintain it’s the people that make this place.

“It’s built around community,” Cory says, “and life is too short to live alone.”
