Northwood Academy “All In” At Carnes Crossroads

August 9th, 2017

Eleven years after a fire destroyed its house of worship in North Charleston, Northwood Church and Academy have officially completed the transition to a new campus at Carnes Crossroads. A small ribbon-cutting ceremony for the opening of Northwood Academy’s lower school on August 4th quietly marked the final transition, and for the first time the entire Academy – serving children in pre-school through 12th grade – is now open on the 60-acre Northwood campus at Carnes Crossroads.

The transition began after the 2006 fire, when the Daniel Island Company donated 60 acres of land at Carnes Crossroads to Northwood as a location for a new church and a campus for its established private school. Northwood Church was constructed first, and has been holding services at Carnes Crossroads since 2012.

As construction of the Northwood Academy facilities got underway, a football field and stands were completed on the campus, giving the Northwood Chargers the team’s first-ever dedicated home field. The Upper School (grades 6-12) opened for classes at its new facility in August 2016. With the recent addition of the Lower School (preschool through 5th grade), the entire Northwood family now calls Carnes Crossroads home.

Northwood Academy enrolls approximately 150 students in its pre-school and 600 students in its Upper and Lower School programs. From its humble beginnings as a one-room school in 1978, it has grown into one of the top college preparatory schools in the region. The completion of the transition to its Carnes Crossroads campus fulfills Northwoods long-range vision of consolidating its campus and positioning itself for future growth in this dynamic region of Charleston.
