Roper St. Francis Selects Carnes Crossroads As Home for Berkeley County’s First Hospital

February 4th, 2016

Roper St. Francis recently announced new details about the 90-acre medical campus it is developing at Carnes Crossroads. A 50-bed hospital is planned to serve as the “nucleus” of the campus, located at the intersection of North Main Street and St. James Avenue. The surrounding property will develop over time as a location for medical offices and services that will address the healthcare needs of the greater community as it grows.

Design work will begin soon for Roper St. Francis Berkeley Hospital, envisioned to be a 140,000 sq. ft. facility that will include obstetrics, an emergency department, inpatient and outpatient surgical services, physical therapy, infusion therapy, a pharmacy, and radiology and imaging services. A 60,000-square-foot medical office building is expected be built next door.

“Convenient access to quality healthcare is something every thoughtfully planned community needs, and we are proud that Carnes Crossroads will be a center for medical services for Summerville, Goose Creek and Berkeley County,” said Matt Sloan, President of the Daniel Island Company, the master developer for Carnes Crossroads. “It’s also exciting that this will help make our area a center for job growth, providing employment opportunities for our community’s residents and contributing to the creation of a place where people can work, live and play.”

One of the Lowcountry’s largest private employers, Roper St. Francis has nearly 5,600 employees. The healthcare system has a robust, active medical staff of more than 800 doctors representing every medical specialty and provides services in more than 125 locations in seven counties.  Once open and fully operating, the new facility is expected to add 285 employees.

Roper St. Francis is Charleston’s only private, not-for-profit hospital system with a specific focus on community outreach. The healthcare system currently has three hospitals strategically located across the region: Roper Hospital on the Charleston peninsula, Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital in West Ashley, and Roper St. Francis Mount Pleasant Hospital in Mount Pleasant.
