The Varleys Make Their Mark On Carnes Crossroads

October 16th, 2017

Joy and Greg Varley always knew they wanted to retire somewhere in Charleston. While living and working in the metropolitan New York area, they spent many years vacationing here and fell in love with everything this region has to offer.

“Charleston offered the things that we were looking for — good medical care, a strong cultural center, universities, good restaurants,” says Greg.

So they came for a week in 2014 to explore the area and check out neighborhoods and real estate opportunities. After visiting many communities they drove into Carnes Crossroads, and immediately they felt at home here.

“We felt that even in the very early stages of development, this was the kind of place that we wanted to be; The people we met gave us the sense that this was the kind of community we were looking for,” Greg explains.

It turns out that the Varleys were the kind of people that the Carnes Crossroads community was looking for as well. It didn’t take long for the pair to get involved in what’s happening here, and in just a short period of time they’ve helped the community’s social network expand in multiple ways. Greg became involved in helping to establish the Carnes Crossroads Neighborhood Association, a resident-led group that serves as a conduit between the Property Owners’ Association and neighbors living in the community. He initially took on some of the responsibilities related to establishing bylaws for the organization, and then naturally transitioned into the role of its first president.

“The Neighborhood Association is a way to bridge communications between the POA and residents within the community,” says Greg. “We’re also working to develop our own set of programs for residents, much as the POA runs community programs at the pool and in the parks.”

The Neighborhood Association isn’t the only community initiative the Varleys have helped cultivate. Joy, an avid crafter who works from a large home studio that was established by customizing the second story of their David Weekley home, is one of many talented artists at Carnes Crossroads.

“A group of residents came to a meeting here at our home and we discussed the fact that we have all these talented people that happen to live in this community,” says Joy. “We took baby steps forward and we actually now have an organization. We are the Carnes Crossroads Artists Cooperative.”

With 17 members currently in the group representing media that ranges from painting and photography to stained glass, woodworking, paper crafts and more, the Artists Cooperative collectively presented their work at the weekly Farmers’ Market at the Green Barn this summer, and they will soon branch out to showcase their talent at other venues throughout the Summerville and Charleston community.

When they’re not busy at Carnes Crossroads, the Varleys enjoy checking out the cultural attractions of Summerville and downtown Charleston, especially restaurants, theater and many of the area’s famed special events. But mostly they enjoy spending time with neighbors and working to help make Carnes Crossroads a wonderful place to live.

“We hope we’re doing things that enhance the quality of life within the community and are very happy to be involved in this extraordinary place,” says Greg.
