Welcome Carolyn Lewis School

Education is the foundation to grow toward a future of happiness, innovation, and prosperity. Creating a quality environment for education is one way our children plant roots and thrive. That’s why we’re thrilled for the grand opening of Carolyn Lewis School at Carnes Crossroads to start the 2023-24 school year! A new K-8 school in the Berkeley County School System, Carolyn Lewis is a large, state-of-the-art facility equipped with everything children need to succeed.

Meet the Loggerheads

The school is named for Carolyn Lewis-Craft. She was the first woman to serve on the county school board and did so for 32 years. Carolyn Lewis School opens as one of the larger schools in the district, expected to hold 1,200 students or Loggerheads. Loggerheads was voted the school’s mascot due to the local turtle’s popularity in the area. Let’s Make Waves!

What To Expect

The K-8 school is fitted with the state-of-the-art features you’d expect a new school to have – a modern entrance and front desk, computers for student learning, a large gymnasium, and more. The school also offers before and after-school child care for families who need it.

Education in the Community

Carolyn Lewis School is a short walk, bike ride, or drive for our Carnes Crossroads residents. It’s truly an exciting prospect for parents and children. Mornings get a little less rushed, students arrive back from school sooner, and children can invite their friends from school over easier, thanks to Carolyn Lewis being within our Carnes Crossroads community. 

To encourage a fun and healthy way for kids to get to school, our community teamed up with the Carolyn Lewis staff to create a bike train, where a line of kids bike to school behind an adult volunteer leading the way, named the ‘Carnes Crossroads Cruisers.’ The 1.9-mile bike train route runs on sidewalks and trails throughout the community with multiple pick-up locations. As the community grows, the Cruisers will expand for more students and parents to walk or bike to the onsite school. The Carolyn Lewis School also has over 300 designated bike rack spots at the entrance to the school.

Fabulous Faculty

Your children will be in great hands with the all-star faculty recruited to Carolyn Lewis School. Teachers with excellent reputations from all walks of life are here to give the best start possible to this new school. Some are coming from other Berkeley County Schools, others are coming to the Lowcountry for the first time, and some teachers already live right here in Carnes Crossroads! Mrs. Melody Allen, for example, has been teaching for 18 years and has recently moved to the area. She will be one of the first 5th-grade teachers at Carolyn Lewis School. “I’m looking forward to teaching math and science (to the new students) this year,” she said.
